The Austin family received an unusually low appraisal on their Marin-City home, so they pretended to be white. Their appraisal came back nearly a half-million dollars higher. ABC7 documentary Our America: Lowballed (2022) explores the systemic racism within all sides of the appraisal industry. The documentary follows ABC reporter Julian Glover as he talks to Black and Latinx families who are struggling to refinance their mortgages or finance the purchase of a new home.
