Marinship Workers in Conversation
Friday, September 22
7:00 p.m. inside the Library
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Marinship shipyard during World War II, the Sausalito Historical Society will present a special "in conversation" program with former Marinship workers C.D. and Ed Madsen. C.D. was a resident of Pine Hill when it was appropriated and dynamited to create landfill for the shipyard. He worked on one of the large cranes at Marinship and later enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific operating a landing craft. His cousin Ed, in addition to being a one-time Marinship employee, was a Sausalito postman for many years. After we hear from C.D. and Ed, the program will conclude with a screening of clips from the film "Tanker," which was made after the war by the W.A. Bechtel Company to recognize the accomplishments of Marinship workers. In just three years of operation, the shipyard built 93 tankers and Liberty ships for the war effort.
