Hints of Grace: The Rebirth of Freda

Sausalito People Series
Hints of Grace: The Rebirth of Freda
Friday, October 6
7:00 p.m. inside the Sausalito Library

In 1996, the 32-foot-long wooden sloop Freda turned one hundred and eleven years old. Her worn, distorted hull was so rotted that she needed more than just a restoration to be safely returned to active sailing. "Hints of Grace" is the technical and aesthetic account of the Arques School of Traditional Boatbuilding’s decade-long project of rebuilding Freda from the keel up. The School’' Director, Bob Darr, will explore the great and small labors of Freda’s rebirth, from shaping timbers to hand-planing, sanding, and painting. Bob came of age in the mid-1960s on his father’s schooners where he was captivated by the beauty of Grace, a San Francisco pilot schooner named after the daughter of sugar-magnate Adolph Spreckel's. Sailing the South Seas on traditional gaff-rigged schooners inspired Bob to spend his adult life designing and building traditional wooden boats.
