Owls: Spies in the Sky
Friday, November 3
7:00 p.m. inside the Library
Join Robert Timineri for an exploration of the relationship between humans and owls. First we’ll hear stories from the audience of our own encounters with owls. Robert will share the story of his communication with Trill, a western screech owl who lives in an enclosure at WildCare in San Rafael. Then we’ll visit images and interpretations of owl behaviors in various cultures, from the Chauvet Caves to Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. With direction from the California Academy of Sciences, we’ll discuss current issues in the study of owls, with a focus on conservation and adaptation to life closer and closer to humans. Next we’ll meet a few owls: trainers and handlers will give us the natural history of these owls and their individual personalities. We're going to learn all we can from owl pellets by dissecting a few samples, with commentary about how and why pellets are formed and what we can learn about diet, habits and anatomy. Finally, two voice artists will interpret various poems and stories about owls. If you have had a personal experience with an owl, captive or wild, please contact Robert at robertpaulconnect@gmail.com.
