Celebration & War: The Sausalito Houseboat Community in the 1970s
Friday, October 12
7:00 p.m. inside the Library
The Sausalito houseboat community has undergone many changes since its inception in the wake of World War II and the closing of the Marinship shipyards. During the 1970s, the houseboat community at the north end of Sausalito was a place of creativity and high energy with theater, art, boat building, and music. People built their own homes out of whatever materials were available to them. Then came development that threatened the freewheeling way of life, and houseboat community came together and fought back in an attempt to keep the Sausalito houseboats affordable housing. In this special presentation, Bruce Forrester will show photographs from his new book, Celebration & War, The Sausalito Houseboat Community in the 1970s. Bruce has lived in Sausalito and Southern Marin since 1974 and has spent his career as a professional Bay Area photographer.
