The Waldo Grade: Highway Through the Hills

Special Program
The Waldo Grade: Highway Through the Hills
Friday, January 25
7:00 p.m. inside the Library

The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge wouldn't have made any sense without an equally bold construction project in the hills above Sausalito. The creation of the 3.6-mile Waldo Grade required the excavation of millions of cubic yards of material and the boring of the first of today’s two tunnels. After the opening of the original undivided four-lane roadway in 1937, additional projects were undertaken to widen the highway. Along the way, serious proposals were made to build alternative roadways that would have required either new tunnels under Sausalito or a viaduct along the Sausalito shoreline. Join Sausalito resident Mike Moyle to explore this fascinating aspect of our local history. This program is co-sponsored by the Sausalito Historical Society and will be followed by a reception in the Exhibit Room on the upper level of City Hall.
